DAVENPORT, IOWA (July 13, 2020) The original collection of Census data was scheduled to end in mid-August but due to restrictions imposed by COVID, the Census intake period was extended to October 31, 2020, adding a full two and a half months to the process. Opportunities to reach out to people face to face have been severely curtailed but there is now more time to reach out to those slower to respond.

Census takers, originally scheduled to be in the field in May, will begin visiting all homes that have not yet responded the second week in August. Self-reporting online or on the telephone will continue to be available through Oct. 31. To take the Census, go to www.2020census.gov.

“We’ll continue to look for ways push the Census message out to all,” Alderwoman Marion Meginnis said. “We ask every resident to do their part by doing their census and assisting friends, neighbors and family members who have not.”

In Davenport, response rates exceed 60 percent in many census tracts with some higher than 70 percent and one in and around McClellan Heights at over 80 percent. A number of tracts have already exceeded their 2010 self-reporting rates, that is, reporting not aided by a census worker going door to door. In some areas, the response rate is lower than 40 or 50 percent.

Unable to put out door hangers, the City direct mailed door hangers and a letter to the three lowest performing census tracts, a total of 3,300 households.
