Nov. 3, 2020 — CitiBus vehicle upgrades, Main Library renovations and the Elm Street Bridge moving closer to being repaired are on the City Council agenda this cycle.

The items will be heard in the Committee of the Whole Wednesday and voted on by the City Council on Nov. 10. The meeting has been moved up a day in observance of Veterans Day. In person attendance of the meeting is limited to 10 due to the governor’s COVID-19 proclamation and Mayor Mike Matson’s executive order restricting gatherings.

Main Library’s renovation Project totals $660,480 and will add study rooms and a new meeting room on the first floor where the Creative Arts Academy was previously located. The library’s sorter located near the front door will be moved into the former CAA space. A new service desk will replace the sorter.

The library’s computer area will receive more space with new tables and chairs so that staff can provide better assistance while also locating the print stations, scanners, fax machine and copier together.

CitiBuses will get avoidance, wheelchair restraint and surveillance systems installed under proposals on the City Council Cycle. The three upgrades for 18 buses total $466,083.94.

The City Council will consider plans, specifications form of contract and cost for the Elm Street Bridge, located between Eastern Avenue and Mound Street. The bridge has been closed since May 2018. Repairs are estimated at $2.3 million. The City received a grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation that will reimburse the City 80% of eligible costs up to $1 million to offset the cost of repairs.
