2018/2019 Snow and Ice Event News and Information

Sun, Mar 17th - 8:00 AM

Snow arrived as predicted.  Crew response was not needed because snow did not stick due to higher pavement temperatures.

Sat, Mar 16th - 4:30 PM

Flooding, got it. Construction, on it. More snow? No matter the season, public works is there.

Just a head’s up - snow is possible beginning around 9 pm this evening, Sat Mar 16th through the early morning hours on Sunday. Less than an inch of accumulation is predicted.

Crews will respond on Posted Snow Routes if the snow starts to fly. Please don’t let daylight savings seduce you - when it Snows Take it Slow.

Mon, Mar 5th - 11:00 AM

Winter is not giving up yet. The current National Weather Service forecast indicates the area could receive one to two inches of snow beginning around noon on Thursday, March 7th and lasting through Thursday night.

Public Works crews are applying salt brine to Posted Snow Routes today and tomorrow in advance of predicted snow.

Why use salt brine? Salt brine, a water and salt mixture, is an effective anti-icing tool we can use when snow is not preceded by rain.  Brine is very effective at breaking the snow-ice/pavement bond when applied before snow because it starts to work when the snow hits the ground.

Crews are prepared to respond when snow arrives.

For more information visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

Fri, Mar 1st - 4:00 PM

Record snow, subzero temperatures, and frequent mixed precipitation storm events challenged the community and public works staff these past several weeks.

To give the community an idea of what response to all of that snow, sleet, rain, and freezing rain mean in terms of resources: 14,560 Labor Hours, 112,000 lane miles driven, and 14,700 tons of salt ($870,000).

The stats are impressive and demonstrate the incredible effort of public works crews who worked many long days and nights to help keep our city moving in challenging weather conditions.

Winter is not over yet.  We do have salt on-hand and crews are prepared to respond when the snow starts to fly.

Fri, Feb 22nd - 11:30 AM
Another round of just about every type of precipitation is expected this weekend. Periods of sleet, rain, freezing rain and snow are all possible.  Read National Weather Service Briefing at this link.

Significant melting combined with rain could result in localized street flooding.  Between snow and ice removal and pothole filling, crews have been working on clearing off the tops of storm drains as they are able.  If you live near one or more of our nearly 10,000 storm drains, please consider clearing to the top off to help all of the melting snow and new rainfall drain from our roads.

Avoid areas of ponding water as you never know how deep the water may be, and be alert for icing conditions when you are out and about this weekend.

Public Works crews are on standby to respond as needed to this weekend’s mixed bag of weather.

Thu, Feb 21st - 3:00 PM

Crews finished residential roads late Wednesday night and performed spot clearing throughout the city as well as filled potholes today.

Wed, Feb 20th - 2:30 PM

Crews turned all snow plowing efforts to residential roads earlier this afternoon.  We anticipate all residential streets will be clear sometime Thursday morning. Please park off-street when you are able in these areas to help crews plow more efficiently and safely.

Please be reminded the city begins enforcement of the sidewalk snow removal policy 24 hours after the cessation of snowfall. Consider shoveling walks for a neighbor in need or who may be away.

Free parking remains available in the city’s parking ramps through 7 am Thursday, February 21st.

Refreezing is possible, especially where ponding has occurred.  Use caution when driving through Thursday.

Melting and more chances for various types of precipitation are expected this weekend.  Please consider clearing the top of nearby storm drains if you are able.

Wed, Feb 20th - 6:00 AM

Crews were called in to respond to arriving snow around midnight.  Snow is expected to continue through noon today, Wednesday, February 20th. Freezing rain and rain are expected to follow on the heels of snow.

Slick roads are possible throughout the day.  Take it slow.

A Snow Emergency remains in effect through 6 pm today.

Snow teams will focus plowing and salting efforts on Posted Snow Routes until they are clear to the curb before clearing residential roads.

For more information on winter weather response activities visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

Tue, Feb 19th - 10:00 AM

The current National Weather Service forecast indicates the area could receive two to four more inches of snow beginning later this evening, Tuesday, February 19th.  A Snow Emergency has been declared due to predicted conditions. The Snow Emergency will be in effect beginning at 10 pm, Tuesday, February 19th through 6 pm Wednesday, February 20th.

Accumulating snow from this event will impact the Wednesday morning commute.  Give yourself a little extra time, increase your following distance and drive with caution if you are out late this evening into Wednesday evening.

Snow is expected to be followed by ice, sleet, and rain.

Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during a Snow Emergency may be ticketed and towed. As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any the city’s parking ramps beginning at 3 pm today, Tuesday, February 19th through 7 am Thursday, February 21st.

Crews will respond when the snow starts to fly.

E-mail, phone and text notifications will be delivered shortly.

Mon, Feb 18th - 3:00 PM

Public Works will finish plowing residential roads before 7 pm this evening, Monday, February 18th.  Teams will return on Tuesday, at which time they will spot check and clear roads as needed.

Crews are prepared to respond to another round of snow that is expected to arrive around 11 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, February 19th.   This system is predicted to bring another two to four inches of snow.

Stay tuned as the timing of this event nears, www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

Mon, Feb 18th - 6:00 AM

Public Works crews will fully transition focus to plowing residential roads in the next hour.  Please park off-street in residential areas when you are able.  Parking off-street helps us clear roads faster and more safely.

Slick spots are possible on Posted Snow Routes and likely on residential roads.   Take it slow and increase your following distance today.

Please be patient as we work to clear residential roads throughout the day.

Sun, Feb 17th - 6:00 AM

Public Works crews were called in earlier this morning to begin the response to arriving snow.  Snow is expected to continue through later this evening, Sunday, February 17th.  Total snow accumulation of three to fives inches is expected.

A Snow Emergency is in effect through 6 am Monday, February 18th.  Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes may be ticketed and towed.  Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in the city’s parking ramps through 7 am, Monday, February 18th.

Plowing and salting efforts will be focused on maintaining Posted Snow Routes until snow ends.

To avoid snow being pushed back onto the end of your driveway, consider waiting to remove snow from the end of the drive until after plows arrive. Or, if you prefer to keep up with falling snow, place snow removed to the right of the driveway.  Placing snow on the left of the drive increases the amount of snow pushed by plows towards your driveway as they move along the street.  Do not push or blow snow from sidewalks and driveways to the road.

For more winter-related information and tips visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

Sat, Feb 16th - 8:30 AM

Here we go again.  Snow is expected to arrive around 11 pm this evening, Saturday, February 16th and last through approximately 6 am, Monday, February 18th.  Snow accumulation of three to five inches is projected to fall during this long duration snow event.

A Snow Emergency has been declared based on predicted conditions.  The Snow Emergency will go into effect at 10 pm this evening, Saturday, February 16th and is set to expire at 6 am Monday, February 18th. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during a Snow Emergency may be ticketed and towed.

As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the city’s parking ramps beginning at 5 pm today, Saturday, February 16th through 7 am Monday, February 18th.

Crews will respond when the snow starts to fly.

E-mail, phone and text notifications will be delivered shortly.

Wed, Feb 13th - 3:30 PM

Public Works crews have finished response to our most recent winter weather event.

Teams will return focus to filling potholes on Thursday, February 14th.

To report a pothole call, Public Works at 563.326.7923 during business hours of 7 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, or submit a request online at https://yourgov.cartegraph.com/.

When submitting your request, please give us an idea about the size of the pothole to help us prioritize filling the largest ones before the smaller less bothersome ones.

Note, when submitting a request online you can create an account or send your request anonymously.  You can also include pictures if you have an opportunity to capture an image safely.

Wed, Feb 13th - 6:00 AM

Public Works crews anticipate clearing all residential roads by mid-to-late morning today, Wednesday, February 13th.  Teams will continue plowing and salting operations throughout the day, clearing areas where drifting has occurred, and performing on-going spot checks and clearing.

All roads should be clear by the end of the day today.

Sun over the next couple of days will promote melting.  Consider removing snow from around nearby storm drains and fire hydrants.  Clearing off storm drains will help melting snow drain away from the road reducing the chance for ice buildup, and uncovering fire hydrants promotes fire department response should an event arise.

The Snow Emergency declaration has expired.

Tue, Feb 12th - 3:30 PM

On-going snow and winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour are anticipated to last through the evening.   Due to changing conditions, crews are switching snow removal efforts between snow routes and residential roads at this time.

The current Snow Emergency will remain in effect through 6 am, Wednesday, February 13th.  In addition to the parking prohibition on Posted Snow Routes, we ask that residents park off-street on all other roads through Wednesday.  Parking off-street helps crews plow faster and more safely.

Please be patient as we continue to work our way to all residential roads and keep Posted Snow Routes clear.

Snow removal operations are expected to continue into Wednesday based on predicted conditions.

Stay safe out there.  Dress for temperatures and drive according to road conditions.

Tue, Feb 12th - 8:30 AM

Not four to six inches as predicted, instead we have seen a mix of everything - rain, sleet, and snow since Monday afternoon.  Periodic snow showers are expected to continue throughout the day today, Tuesday, February 12th.  These snow bursts are arriving with just enough snow to re-cover clean roads and require on-going plowing.

Crews will remain focused on plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes until clear curb-to-curb before clearing residential roads, which may not start until early evening depending on on-going snow.

Slick, slushy driving conditions are possible on Posted Snow Routes as spotty snow showers arrive, and likely on residential roads throughout the day.  Take it slow.

The current Snow Emergency is set to expire at 6 am Wednesday, February 13th. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes will be ticketed and may be towed.

We will post an update on conditions and where crews are at in the snow removal process this afternoon.

Consider waiting to shovel your driveway until after plows arrive.

Expect heavy wet snow and periods of low visibility through this evening and into Tuesday morning.

Public Works crews will begin response when the snow starts to accumulate.  Snow teams will focus plowing and salting efforts on maintaining Posted Snow Routes as snow arrives.

We will provide an update on snow response, and details on tomorrow’s weather expectations for this wrap around snow event Tuesday morning.

Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps from 4 pm Monday, February 11th through 7 am Wednesday, February 13th.

Remember to take it slow when there is ice and snow.

To sign-up for notifications and for more information visit www.davenportiowa.com/snow.

Thu, Feb 7th - 5:00 PM

Crews are not plowing or salting at this time.

Thu, Feb 7th - 6:30 AM

Public Works crews were called in early this morning to begin salting in response to freezing rain that arrived.

Rain, temperatures on the threshold of freezing, and additional chances for freezing rain around the noon hour will keep crews on their toes.  Snow teams will be monitoring conditions and salting as needed throughout the day.

Slick spots are possible.  Take it slow and increase your following distance today.

Looking ahead, temperatures, with wind chill factored in, are expected to range between -7 and -20 degrees on Friday, February 8th.  Remember to dress in layers and limit time outside.

Wed, Feb 6th - 5:30 PM

The National Weather Service forecast has changed a bit since our last update. The forecast still indicates a chance for freezing rain this evening. However, the rain that had been predicted for early Thursday morning is now to predicted to come in as freezing rain.

Expect slick road conditions tomorrow morning, Thursday, February 7th, if freezing rain arrives as currently predicted.  Be sure to give yourself a little extra time and take it slow when you go.

Stay tuned to the National Weather Service, the city website and social media, or local news for more details as active weather remains in the forecast for the near term.

Crews will respond when winter weather arrives.

Wed, Feb 6th - 2:30 PM

Welcome to the Wild, Wild, Midwest.  Public Works will finish salting all residential roads before 6 pm this evening.

Slick spots are possible. Take it slow.

Solid waste collection will occur as scheduled today, however, will begin a little later than usual. Also, all three of the City’s Libraries will open late, at 11 am, this morning. CitiBus is operating on schedule.

Another brief chance for freezing rain will occur around 9 pm this evening Wednesday, February 6th. Stay tuned for more weather alerts in the coming days as temperatures are expected to take another dive on Friday.

Tue, Feb 5th - 2:30 PM

Freezing rain will arrive soon, and is expected to last through midnight.  Travel is not advised.  Between a tenth and three-tenths of freezing rain and possibly two-tenths of an inch of sleet are possible with this system.

A Snow Emergency will go into effect beginning at 3 pm and will remain in effect through 7 am Wednesday, February 6th.

Public Works crews are ready to respond when freezing rain arrives. Teams will focus salting efforts on Posted Snow Routes until freezing rain ends and routes are free of ice before salting residential roads.

Everyone is encouraged to stay home when possible.  If you must go out, do so with caution.  Leave extra distance between you and the car in front of you. Walk like a penguin on sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.

Winds are expected to be lower than anticipated which reduces the chance of downed trees and power lines; however, this does not mean these conditions are not possible.

  • Report downed trees in the street to Public Works at 563.326.7923.
  • Report downed power lines to MidAmerican Energy at 800.799.4443.

Cars parked on Posted Snow Routes during the Snow Emergency may be ticketed and towed.  Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in any one of the city’s parking ramps beginning at 3:00 pm today through 7:00 am, Wednesday, February 6th.

Tue, Feb 5th - 8:30 AM

The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning. The warning is in effect from 12:00 pm today through 6:00 am, Wednesday, February 6th.  A Snow Emergency has been declared to support efficient salt response and to reduce hazardous conditions for plows distributing salt. The Snow Emergency will be in effect from 3:00 pm today through 7:00 am, Wednesday, February 6th.

Hazardous travel conditions, downed trees, and power lines are possible.  Please take the following precautions:

  • Drive and Walk with Caution.  Leave extra distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • Consider canceling evening and overnight travel plans.
  • Report downed trees in the street by calling Public Works at 563.326.7923.
  • If there is a downed power line, do not touch it or attempt to remove debris that may surround the downed line.  Call MidAmerican Energy at 800.799.4443 to report the condition.
  • Visit www.davenportiowa.com/prepare  for more information on how to stay warm and safe if you lose power.

Cars parked on Posted Snow Routes during a Snow Emergency may be ticketed and towed.  Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in any one of the city’s parking ramps beginning at 3:00 pm today through 7:00 am, Wednesday, February 6th.

Tue, Feb 5th - 7:00 AM

Crews were able to finish removing snow from all Posted Snow Routes in the Downtown, not just 2nd, 3rd and 4th St, around 3:00 AM this morning, Tuesday, February 5th.

Sun, Feb 3rd - 2:00 PM

Temporary No Parking will go into effect on 2nd, 3rd and 4th Streets in the Downtown between Gaines and E River Dr beginning at 5 pm Monday, February 4th through 7 am, Tuesday, February 5th for a Snow Emergency Declaration. No other areas in the city are affected by this Snow Emergency.

The Snow Emergency has been declared to ensure vehicles are moved off of these streets to allow plows to haul snow away from the area.

Ticketing and towing of cars parked on these roads will begin promptly at 10 pm Monday, February 4th.

Residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s parking ramps between 5 pm Monday, February 4th and 7 am Tuesday, February 5th.

Text, phone and e-mail notification will be sent to those subscribed to Snow Emergency alerts at 8:30 am Monday, February 4th.

Sat, Feb 2nd - 6:00 AM

Crews finished plowing residential roads around 8 pm, Friday, February 1st.  Snow teams are on standby should winter weather response arise.

Fri, Feb 1st - 3:00 PM

Public Works crews will continue clearing residential roads through the evening.  Teams will be making a pass in each direction, except on those streets where vehicular parking prevents plowing from happening safely. Crews estimate all residential streets will be cleared before early Saturday morning, February 2nd.

Please be advised there is a chance for freezing drizzle nearly all day Saturday.  It is possible we will see slick streets throughout the day; primarily affecting less traveled roads, sidewalks, driveways, parking lots and bridge decks.  Please do not expect to drive as you would in normal weather; drive with caution, leave yourself a little extra space.

Higher temperatures and rain remain in the weekend forecast.  Our next chance for snow is on Tuesday.

As melting occurs and you dig out and clean up, consider clearing nearby storm drains to help all of that water drain away from the street.

Removal of snow piles in the Downtown is expected early next week.  We will provide notice, and send out a notification to those who have subscribed to receive text, phone and e-mail alerts when this is scheduled to occur.

Fri, Feb 1st - 6:30 AM

Public Works crews will finish plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes around 8 am this morning, Friday, February 1st.  Snow Teams will make a pass in each direction on residential roads after Posted Snow Routes are clear, unless vehicular parking prevents this from happening safely. Residential roads will not be cleared to the curb.

Higher temperatures and rain this weekend mean melting will occur. Melting and rain combined could contribute to localized flooding in many areas.   As snow piles melt and you begin the process of digging out, consider clearing a nearby storm drain to help all of the water from all of that snow leave the road.

Be aware this weekend’s temperatures are a bit of tease, as more snow is in the forecast for Tuesday and a slight chance for freezing rain exists on Saturday morning.

Clearing of snow piles in the Downtown is expected early next week.  We will provide notice, and send out a notification to those who have subscribed to receive text, phone and e-mail alerts when this is scheduled to occur.

Visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter to sign-up to receive alerts and for more information on winter weather response information.

Thu, Jan 31st - 6:00 PM

Snow teams will continue plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes through the evening and into the overnight until clear.  Snow is not expected to let up until around 8pm this evening, Thursday, January 31st.  There is a lingering chance for snow to continue through 10pm.

Please park off-street on Posted Snow Routes to help crews clear roads safely and efficiently.

Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in the city's parking ramps through 7am, Friday, February 1st as an alternative to on-street parking in the area.

We will post an update on conditions and response activities Friday morning.

Remember to take it slow when there is ice and snow.

Thu, Jan 31st - 1:00 PM

Public Works crews are plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes in response to arriving snow.  Please park off Posted Snow Routes when you are able until routes are clear.  Parking off-street helps crews to clear roads more safely and efficiently.

One and a half to two inches of snow are expected with this system, with the bulk of snow arriving before 5pm.

Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in the city's parking ramps through 7am, Friday, February 1st as an alternative to on-street parking in the area.

Roads may be slick through the evening hours.  Please do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

Updates on this event and response activities will be provided later tonight, Thursday, January 31st.

Thu, Jan 31st - 6:30 AM

Heads up. Subzero temperatures are expected to last through the evening, and snow is also likely beginning around noon today, Thursday, January 31st.  So what does this mean for you? Well…

Road conditions could be slick.  An inch or more of snow is predicted to fall between 11 am and 11 pm.  Crews will respond by clearing Posted Snow Routes when the snow starts to fly.

CitiBus will continue running limited capacity service with vans and sedans through the afternoon.  Please consider alternate transportation. Updates will be provided when we return to normal service.  Use the Transloc Rider app or visit www.citidbus.com and use the system map for details.

Solid Waste collection will begin later in the morning due to early morning temperatures causing issues with diesel and hydraulics.  Be reminded collection is one day late due to cancellation on Wednesday, and that bulky waste pickup has been cancelled for the week. Friday’s collection will occur on Saturday. Please know if we missed collection due to the hour, snow challenges or temperature we are recording this information and will return the following day to catch your collection.

To help visitors and residents in the downtown keep vehicles out of the brutal cold and off the road, the parking ramps will remain free through Friday, February 1st at 7 am.

All three Library locations will not open until noon today.

Advise for the day.  Stay warm, dress in layers, limit time outside, take it slow when driving, and call before you go to make sure your destination is open.

Mother Nature is certainly testing our collective resources and disposition.  Hang in there, remember this is Iowa - where temperature swings of 50 degrees or more and dramatically changing weather in the span of hours are not unheard of.  In fact temperatures in the 40’s and a chance for all forms of precipitation are expected this weekend.

Tue, Jan 29th - 3:00 PM

Public Works crews will be spot clearing all roads for the remainder of the day and Wednesday as conditions allow.

New chances for snow arrive on Thursday and remain in the forecast through the weekend.

Crews are prepared to respond when snow arrives.  Stay tuned for more information on predicted snow as we near the weekend.

Tue, Jan 29th - 6:30 PM

Public Works crews have temporarily returned focus to Posted Snow Routes this morning due to a recent dusting and significant blowing and drifting that is occurring.  Teams will finish clearing residential streets later this morning/early afternoon.  Once residential roads are clear, crews will re-run and spot clear routes across the city.

Slick road conditions are possible in areas where blowing and drifting is occurring.

Please be reminded solid waste will not be collected on Wednesday.  Collection will be one day late the remainder of the week; Wednesday's collection will happen on Thursday, Thursday's collection will happen on Friday, and Friday's collection will happen on Saturday.

In related news, be careful and limit your time outdoors now through Thursday.  If you are out and about, be sure you have a full tank of gas and pack a safety kit including a cell phone charger, blanket, water and snacks.

For other safety and preparedness tips for dealing with cold weather at home, visit www.davenportiowa.com/prepare.

Mon, Jan 28th - 2:00 PM

Public Works crews have begun transitioning focus to clearing residential roads.  Please park off-street if you are able. Parking off-street helps us to clear roads more safely and efficiently.

Blowing and drifting snow will present snow removal challenges throughout the day into the overnight.   Please be patient as crews work to clear all streets.

Snow teams have been dealing with a lot of snow being pushed or blown into the street. Snow pushed or blown to the street not only creates hazardous conditions, but it can reduce the level of service we are able to provide.  Push or blow snow into your lawn.  Just remember all of that snow (23+ inches) has to go somewhere.  Curbside and boulevard piles of snow will continue to grow until we see melting.

For more information on winter weather response activities or to sign-up for notifications when a Snow Emergency is declared, visit www.davenortiowa.com/winter.

Mon, Jan 28th - 6:00 AM

Public Works crews are plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes at this time.  Focus will remain on these roads until they are clear sometime later this morning to early afternoon.  Once Posted Snow Routes are clear, snow teams will turn focus to residential roads.

Snow ended shortly after 4am, leaving with it approximately four inches of snow.

Blowing, drifting and dropping temperatures beginning late this morning/early afternoon will present snow removal challenges throughout the day.

A Snow Emergency remains in effect through 3 pm.  Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during an active Snow Emergency may be ticketed and towed. As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps through 5 pm, today, Monday, January 28th.

Take it slow when there is ice and snow.

An update on conditions will be provided mid-day.

Sun, Jan 27th - 10:30 AM

Snow, snow, snow and more snow… Public Works crews finished response to yesterday’s snow event around 10 pm last night, and are on standby to begin response to predicted snow beginning around 6 pm this evening, Sunday, January 27th.

Due to predicted snowfall of around three inches, a Snow Emergency has been declared. The Snow Emergency will go into effect at 6 pm today, Sunday, January 27th and is set to expire at 3 pm, Monday, January 28th.

Snow will begin later this evening and last through the Monday morning commute. In addition, freezing rain is possible between 5 am and 8 am Monday.  Driving conditions will likely be slick.  Give yourself a little extra time and increase your following distance if you head out tonight or tomorrow morning.

Parking on Posted Snow Routes is prohibited when a Snow Emergency is in effect. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes will be ticketed and may be towed.  As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps beginning at 5 pm, today, Sunday, January 27th through 5 pm Monday, January 28th.

We will get a small break in subzero temperatures on Monday; however, arctic temperatures return late Monday and are expected to last through Thursday.  Please limit your time, and your pet’s time, outside.  Dress in layers and cover exposed skin.

Please remember, we will not be collecting bulky waste (large items outside of the cart) next week for employee safety.  All other solid waste collection (garbage and recycling) should occur as scheduled unless snowfall totals are significantly higher than predicted.

Sat, Jan 26th - 9:00 PM

Crews will finish plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes by 11:00 pm.

Sat, Jan 26th - 1:00 PM

Well, what was a slight chance for snow, turned into a 100% chance. Crews were called in a short time ago to begin response to this event. Snow teams will salt and plow Posted Snow Routes as needed. The current forecast indicates around an inch of snow is possible with this system. Snow is expected to end between 3 and 5pm.

Slick road conditions are possible. Remember to take it slow when there is ice and snow.

If you shovel, remember those temps are brutal. Wear a hat and gloves, dress in layers and take frequent breaks.

Fri, Jan 25th - 7:00 PM

Public Works crews have finished plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes as needed in response to this evening's minor snow event.

Crews are on standby and prepared to respond to predicted snow late Sunday/early Monday.

Fri, Jan 25th - 11:00 AM

More snow is predicted to arrive this afternoon, bringing with it another inch of snow between noon and 6 pm today, Friday, January 25th.

Public Works crews have finished clearing all roads following our mid-week snow event.  Snow teams will continue with some spot clearing through the afternoon.  Focus will return to clearing Posted Snow Routes when snow returns later today.

A Snow Emergency will not be declared for this event; however, we encourage everyone on a Posted Snow Route to park off-street when they can, to support snow clearing operations.  Parking off-street is especially helpful when knowing another round of snow is expected to arrive late Sunday into Monday.

Folks we have received 18.4 inches of snow since January 1st. Little-to-no melting has occurred, and more snow, combined with subzero temps, is on the way.

Please recognize that the snow we clear from the roadway to promote public safety and mobility throughout the city has to go somewhere.   Curbside and boulevard piles of snow will grow until melting can occur. Push driveway and sidewalk snow to the lawn, not the street.  Doing so helps to distribute all of that snow over a larger area.

Due to the volume of snow with nowhere to go, chances are your neighborhood fire hydrant may be difficult to see.  Consider removing snow from around the hydrant to support response should an emergency arise.

Stay safe out there.  The chance of slick road conditions will remain high into next week.   Arctic temperatures will also make it difficult to be outside safely.  Limit your time outdoors and dress in layers.

Thu, Jan 24th - 2:30 PM

Thank you for your patience. Clearing of residential roads will continue overnight and into tomorrow, Friday, January 25th.  Crews will be clearing roads not already plowed, re-running routes and performing additional clearing as needed.  Additional clearing will not be performed on residential streets where vehicular parking presents hazardous conditions.  Areas we are unable to access with a plow due to on-street parking will not be cleared later.

Blowing an drifting snow will present challenges for on-going snow removal.

If your road has not been cleared by tomorrow morning, Friday, January 25th, please contact us to report the condition at 563.326.7923. The road may have been missed (1,200 lane miles) or not safely navigated with a plow due to vehicular parking.  We are happy to go and do what we can to improve the road’s conditions.

Just remember we are all in this together.  Snow and ice present inconvenience for everyone.  Even our own staff gets stuck, and have driveways plowed back in after working twelve-hour shifts.  It is the nature of nature – unpredictable and beautiful at timesThe best we can all do is to prepare and take it slow.

You can welcome it, or be frustrated by it, either way, chances are our next round of snow is just around the corner (likely this weekend).

Thu, Jan 24th - 6:00 AM

Public Works crews will continue plowing residential roads through later today.

One issue crews are facing is snow being blown or shoveled from sidewalks and driveways onto the road.  This is creating large piles that are adding to already high accumulations on the road, which makes clearing even more challenging. When clearing sidewalks and driveways, push the snow into the yard, not into the street.  You can be fined for pushing snow into the street according to city ordinance.

Please continue to park off-street throughout the day to help crews clear residential roads efficiently and safely.

Wed, Jan 23rd - 2:30 PM

Public Works crews are finishing up Posted Snow Routes and transitioning plowing resources to clearing residential roads.

Please park off-street on residential roads through Thursday afternoon when you are able.  Parking off-street helps crews to clear roads more safely and efficiently, especially on narrow roadways.

Public Works is not anticipating a Snow Emergency declaration for the Downtown and Hilltop areas anytime soon. While the snow has ended for today, active weather remains in our forecast.  High winds and subzero temperatures on Thursday, a chance for snow on Friday, and another chance for snow on Sunday night will keep everyone on their toes.

If you haven’t shoveled yet, consider doing so before 6 pm to avoid the deep freeze. Temperatures with wind chill are forecasted to be between -1 to -28 degrees beginning later this evening through Thursday. No matter when you shovel, remember to take it slow, take frequent breaks and dress in layers. Consider shoveling walks for a neighbor in need or who may be away.

Stay safe out there.  Dress in layers, take it slow and use caution when out and about driving or walking on less traveled surfaces in the coming week.  Be prepared - the chances for frostbite, hypothermia and running into a slick surface increase with the types of weather we are experiencing.

Wed, Jan 23rd - 6:00 AM

Snow has been on-going through the overnight and is not expected to end until around 9 am this morning, Wednesday, January 23rd. Public Works crews will remain focused on plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes until they are clear before entering residential areas.

The area has received approximately six inches of snow, and another one to three inches is expected to fall before the snow ends.

Due to the late arrival and extended timeframe for snow, the current Snow Emergency is being extended through 3 pm, today, Wednesday, January 23rd. Parking on Posted Snow Routes is prohibited when a Snow Emergency is in effect. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes will be ticketed and may be towed. Notification of the extended Snow Emergency will be sent to text, phone and e-mail subscribers at 8:30 am this morning.

As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps through 5 pm, Wednesday, January 23rd.

Motorists are reminded to take their time, increase their following distance, and to travel with caution today.  Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

Walk like a penguin on less traveled surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.  These areas are likely to be slick if they have not been cleared.

The best time for shoveling driveways and sidewalks will be after lunch and before the late evening when temperatures begin to drop again.

We will issue another update on conditions and response activities later today.

Tue, Jan 22nd - 4:30 PM

Mother Nature has finally narrowed it down to one form of precipitation for the remainder of the day, and Snow it is.  The National Weather Service forecast indicates we should expect snow through 7 am tomorrow and possibly longer, with snow accumulations of around four inches.

Public Works crews are plowing and salting at this time.  Snow teams will be focused on plowing and salting all Posted Snow Routes until they are clear before entering residential areas.

Please be reminded a Snow Emergency remains in effect through 11 am, Wednesday, January 23rd.  You may be ticketed and towed if you are parked on a Posted Snow Route when a Snow Emergency is in effect.  As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps through 5 pm, Wednesday, January 23rd.

Slick spots are possible on all roads.  A thin layer of ice is likely on many less traveled roads and surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.  Use caution and take it slow when driving or walking.

Tue, Jan 22nd - Noon

The National Weather Service forecast indicates the chance for ice remains high through 1 pm this afternoon, Tuesday, January 22nd.  Snow is expected to arrive beginning shortly after ice moves out, and anticipated to continue until around 8 am tomorrow.  Around four inches of snow is expected with this system.

A Snow Emergency is in effect through 11 am Wednesday, January 23rd. Parking on Posted Snow Routes is prohibited when a Snow Emergency is in effect. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes will be ticketed and may be towed.

As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps through 5 pm, Wednesday, January 23rd.

Earlier this morning Public Works crews began cleaning up areas of remaining snow throughout the city and applying salt to Posted Snow Routes.

Slick roads remain possible through Wednesday.  Less traveled sidewalks, driveways and parking lots will likely be slick.  Whether you are walking or driving, take it slow.

Tue, Jan 22nd - 8:00 AM

The National Weather Service forecast indicates the area is expected to receive a mixed bag of precipitation today, Tuesday, January 22nd.  Based on predicted conditions a Snow Emergency has been declared.  The Snow Emergency will be in effect beginning at 11am, today, Tuesday, January 22nd through 11 am, Wednesday, January 23rd.  Parking on Posted Snow Routes is prohibited when a Snow Emergency is in effect.

With up to a tenth of an inch of ice, along with three or more inches of snow, up to a half inch of rain, and sleet possible, expect slick road conditions throughout the day and into Wednesday, January 23rd.  Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.  Drive with caution, give yourself a little extra time and increase your following distance.

As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps between 11 am today, Tuesday, January 22nd through 5 pm, Wednesday, January 23rd.

Sun, Jan 20th - 6:00 AM

Public Works crews have finished clearing all streets.  Streets have been cleared to the extent possible following our Friday/Saturday snow event.  Subzero temperatures combined with snowpack will prevent additional clearing from being performed at this time. Salt and some sun will promote additional melting in the coming days.

Temperature with wind chill will be subzero today, Sunday, January 20th.  Remember to dress in layers and to wear a hat and gloves. Don’t forget to keep furry family members indoors; make outdoor trips brief.

Due to additional chances for snow, rain, and sleet on Tuesday, the city will not be making a determination on the timing or need for a 2nd Snow Emergency until the forecast for Tuesday becomes more accurate. Stay tuned. If a 2nd Snow Emergency for the Downtown and Hilltop is declared, we will post notice on the website, social media, and to those who have subscribed to notifications.

Sat, Jan 19th - 4:00 PM

Public Works crews have fully transitioned to plowing and salting residential roads.  The team should have all residential roads complete by late morning Sunday, January 20th.

Please continue to park off-street when you are able through Sunday morning.  Parking off-street helps crews to clear roads more safely and efficiently, especially on narrower residential streets. Watch a video of what plowing can be like on narrow streets when cars are parked on both sides.

Be reminded temperature with wind chill will hover above and below zero degrees beginning later this evening into Sunday.  Dress in layers and take frequent breaks if you are out shoveling.

Due to additional chances for snow, rain, and sleet on Tuesday, the city will not be making a determination on the timing or need for a 2nd Snow Emergency until the forecast for Tuesday becomes more reliable.
Stay tuned.  If a 2nd Snow Emergency for the Downtown and Hilltop is declared, we will post notice on the website, social media, and to those who have subscribed to notifications.

Please park off-street on residential roads today, Saturday, January 19th through Sunday morning, when you are able.  Parking off-street helps crews to clear roads more safely and efficiently, especially on narrow roadways.

The current Snow Emergency expires at 6 pm today, Saturday, January 19th. As an alternative to on-street parking in the Downtown, residents, and visitors to the area may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps through 7 am Sunday, January 20th.

Feels like temperatures will drop below zero degrees later this evening and remain below zero through Sunday.  Remember to take breaks and dress in layers if you are out shoveling sidewalk snow.

Tue, Jan 15, 2019, 1:30 PM

The National Weather Service forecast indicates there is a chance for patchy freezing drizzle through 5am, Wednesday, January 16th.   Slick roads are possible.

Crews are on standby to respond as needed.

Remember to take it slow on ice and snow.

Tue, Jan 15, 2019 - 5:00 AM

Some light drizzle came through the area earlier this morning creating slippery conditions. Crews have salted Posted Snow Routes.

Spotty areas of slick roadways are possible on our major thoroughfares and likely on less traveled residential roads, sidewalks and driveways.

Travel with caution this morning.  Give yourself a little extra time and increase your following distance.

Remember to walk like a penguin when there is ice:

- Extend your arms to keep balance,

- Keep hands out of your pockets,

As an alternative to on-street parking during the 2nd Snow Emergency, residents and visitors to the area may park for free in the city’s ramps beginning at 5pm, today, Monday, January 14th through 7am, Tuesday January 15th.

Response to this snow event will conclude with the removal of snow from the Downtown and Hilltop Tuesday morning.

Why does the city have a 2nd Snow Emergency for the Downtown and Hilltop?

Due to the density of buildings in these areas, there is little space for snow to go when we receive significant snow of four or more inches. This is the reason a 2nd Snow Emergency is called for these areas. During the 2nd Snow Emergency snow is loaded and hauled out of the area, which in turn frees up on-street parking and pedestrian hazards presented by all of the excess snow with nowhere to go.

Sun, Jan 13, 2019 - 4:00 PM

Crews will finish plowing and salting residential roads by 6pm this evening.

As a reminder, a 2nd Snow Emergency specific to the Downtown and Hilltop will go into effect at 10pm, Monday, January 14th to allow for snow removal and hauling from the area.  This 2nd Snow Emergency is set to expire at 6am, Tuesday, January 15th.

For pedestrian safety, residents should begin the process of removing snow from their sidewalks. When shoveling snow, remember to take it slow and to take breaks, push the snow, and stay hydrated. If you are able, consider helping to remove snow from neighboring sidewalks where the individual may be less able or away.

Sat, Jan 12, 2019 - 2:00 PM

Crews will remain focused on clearing Posted Snow Routes through later tonight into early Sunday, January 13th.  Parking on Posted Snow Routes is prohibited until 10pm this evening, Saturday, January 12th when the current Snow Emergency expires.

Wed, Jan 9, 2019 - 10:00 AM

Public Works crews began applying salt brine to Posted Snow Routes today, Wednesday, January 9th, and will continue through tomorrow. The brine is being applied in advance of the chance for snow beginning late Friday, January 11th.

Did you know salt brine can only be applied as pre-treatment when snow is not preceded by rain because rain washes brine treatments away? Public Works applies salt brine whenever the opportunity exists because it is an effective tool in early melting, lessens snow’s ability to bond with the pavement, and reduces overall salt use.

Public works is prepared to respond to arriving winter weather as needed.

Visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter to sign-up for snow emergency notifications or to find out more about the city’s snow operations.

Sat, Dec 29, 2018 - 7:00 AM

Sun, Dec 2, 2018 - 3:00 PM

The National Weather Service reports there is a chance of light snow through 4am.
Dropping temps, recent melting, and light snow could cause roads to be slick for the early morning commute.

Take it slow and drive with caution if you are out overnight or early tomorrow morning. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

Sign-up to receive text, phone or e-mail notifications when a Snow Emergency is declared at www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

There are no open Snow Emergencies.  Crews have finished clearing roads on a 24 hour shift.  Crews will return to regular hours tomorrow. Efforts will be focused on clearing the tops of storm drains, spot treating slick areas, and removing snow piles as needed.

Warmer temperatures and rain in the forecast will continue to melt remaining icepack in the coming days.

With over 10,000 storm drains in Davenport, residents can assist with reducing the threat for localized flooding by ensuring the storm drain in their neighborhood is clear to receive run-off from melting snow and predicted rain.

Tue, Nov 27, 2018 - 1:00 PM

Crews began clearing residential roads last night. Making it through all residential roads will take time due to the volume of snow received. Efforts will continue overnight and into tomorrow.  We expect all residential roads to be cleared by late Wednesday afternoon.

Please continue to park off-street when you are able on residential roads to help crews clear roads more efficiently and safely.

Be reminded slick conditions are possible through the week due to melting and refreezing.  Watch for black ice and slick bridge decks.

Mon, Nov 26, 2018 - 1:00 PM

Crews will finish clearing all Posted Snow Routes early this evening.  The focus will switch to snow removal on all residential roads once complete. With the transition to clearing residential roads, it becomes especially helpful for everyone on residential roads to park off-street when they are able, or to coordinate with neighbors to park on one side of the street.  Parking off-street helps crews clear roads more efficiently and safely. This becomes very important when clearing roads after a significant event such as yesterday.

Clearing the heavy wet snow we received will be challenging for a few days.  Once residential roads are entered, we will likely see melting during the day and refreezing overnight.  Use caution when you travel in the days ahead.

For pedestrian safety, residents should begin the process of removing snow from their sidewalks. This is heavy wet snow.  Removal can put a strain on the heart. When shoveling today and tomorrow, please remember to: take frequent breaks, take it slow, push the snow, and to stay hydrated. If you are able, consider helping to remove snow from neighboring sidewalks where the individual may be less able.

All solid waste collection for today, Monday, November 26th was canceled earlier due to road conditions. All solid waste collection will run one day late this week due to today’s cancellation.  Monday’s collection will occur on Tuesday; Friday’s collection will occur on Saturday.

Roughly 10 plus inches of heavy wet snow was deposited across the area yesterday and into the overnight.  Crews will be focused on clearing Posted Snow Routes throughout the day today.  Residential roads will present travel difficulties until crews can switch focus to these roads.

Blowing and drifting will remain a challenge for everyone today.

A Snow Emergency remains in effect through 5 pm today, Monday, November 26th.  Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during a Snow Emergency will be ticketed and may be towed or plowed in. Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in any one of the City’s three parking ramps through 5 pm, today, Monday, November 26th.

This is heavy wet snow.  Sidewalk snow removal can strain the heart. When shoveling today, please remember to: take frequent breaks, take it slow, push the snow, and to stay hydrated. If you are able, consider helping to remove snow from neighboring sidewalks where the individual may be less able.

For more information on winter weather response activities and tips visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

We will issue another update on conditions later today.

Sun, Nov 25, 2018 - 3:00 PM
