Crews are applying salt brine to all Posted Snow Routes today and tomorrow in preparation for the possibility of snow over the weekend.  Staff is prepared to respond as needed should conditions warrant.

02/25/17, 5:30 AM
Overnight precipitation, combined with melting, below freezing air temperatures, and wind, resulted in slick conditions early this morning. Crews were called in at 1:30am to apply salt to all Posted Snow Routes, residential hills and intersections. Salt application should be complete by 6am this morning.

Pavement is wet, however, slick spots may still develop until temperatures rise and the sun comes out later this morning/early this afternoon. The traveling public should increase their following distance and drive with caution throughout the morning.

02/24/17, 9:00 AM
The National Weather Service forecast indicates there is a 50% chance the area could receive up to 1.3” of snow between 7pm Friday, February 24th and 5am, Saturday, February 25th.

Crews are prepared to respond as needed once snow arrives.

Conditions could become slick at times. Please do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions this evening and overnight.

Crews have not applied brine in advance of this event, as snow is expected to be preceded by rain.

Please take your time during the morning commute, as roads could be a little slick at times.

02/07/17, 12:30 PM
The National Weather Service forecast indicates the area could receive up to a tenth of inch of snow between 4am and 1pm Wednesday, February 8th.  Crews are prepared to respond, however do not anticipate the need for response unless conditions become slick, or the area receives more snow than predicted.

Streets will not be pre-treated for this event, as snow is expected to be preceded by rain.

02/02/17, 9:30 AM
Crews are applying salt brine to Primary Posted Snow Routes today in advance of a possible snow event on Saturday.  Should confidence in a snow event increase today, into tomorrow, crews will continue applying brine to all Posted Snow Routes on Friday.

Find more details on weekend weather at the National Weather Service.

01/26/17, 5:00 AM
Temperatures dropping below freezing and high winds early this morning have resulted in slick conditions. This morning's snow dusted roads may not appear slick, but could very well be. Please drive with caution and increase your following distance during the morning commute.

Crews have been called in and are salting all Posted Snow Routes and residential hills.

01/25/17, Noon
The current forecast indicates the area could receive up to ¾” of an inch of snow between 5pm and 9pm this evening, Wednesday, January 25th.  Snow is expected to be preceded by rain, and little accumulation is expected as air and pavement temperatures are predicted to remain at or above freezing.

Crews are prepared to respond as needed to this evenings event.

As with any snow event, slick spots may develop.  Don’t expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

01/16/17, 6:00 AM
Monday's solid waste collection has been cancelled. All solid waste collection will be one day late this week. CitiBus may experience delays this morning due to slick conditions.

Crews began response to the current freezing rain/rain event at 9:30 PM Sunday night and will continue salting Posted Snow Routes until this system turns to all rain around 9:00/10:00AM this morning.

It is possible for slick conditions to develop on Posted Snow Routes until precipitation turns to all rain. Untreated residential roads, sidewalks, driveways and decks are likely to be slippery.

Avoid travel if possible this morning. If you must travel, please drive with caution and increase your following distance. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

Remember to walk like a penguin when on ice.

01/15/17, 5:00 PM
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through Noon, Monday, January 16th. At this time, the forecast indicates there is a greater chance for freezing rain to occur between Midnight and 10am Monday, with the likeliest chances between 6am and 10am. Rain is expected to follow freezing rain conditions.

Crews are prepared to respond to conditions should forecasted weather arrive. Freezing rain will present challenging conditions for responders and the traveling public alike. Please monitor conditions and avoid travel if possible overnight and into mid-morning Monday. Street surfaces could become slick.

01/15/17, 10:00 AM
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 9pm this evening lasting through Noon, Monday, January 16th.

The area may begin receiving a wintry mix of sleet, snow, freezing rain as early as 3pm, however, the bulk of the precipitation is anticipated to arrive later this evening and into the overnight hours.

From the National Weather Service:
- SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...UP TO 1 INCH...WITH LIGHT SLEET ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE.

- ICE ACCUMULATIONS...AROUND A TENTH OF AN INCH TO NEAR A QUARTER OF AN INCH.

- IMPACTS...ROADS AND SIDEWALKS MAY BECOME ICE COATED AND VERY HAZARDOUS

Crews are prepared to respond.  Please avoid travel when this system arrives as roads may become slippery.  If you must travel, please increase your following distance and drive with caution.

01/13/17, 6:30 AM
The current National Weather Service Forecast indicates we could see a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, snow and rain this weekend.

This evening the forecast indicates “LIGHT FREEZING RAIN IS POSSIBLE TONIGHT SOUTH OF A LINE FROM IOWA CITY TO PRINCETON...ILLINOIS. LITTLE TO NO IMPACTS ARE EXPECTED FROM THIS EVENT.” and a Winter Storm Watch will go into effect Sunday afternoon when a second round of precipitation is expected.

Crews are prepared to respond to conditions that may arrive.

Please remember to increase your following distance if roads become slick and avoid travel if hazardous conditions exist.

Accumulating ice can result in downed power lines. Understand how to protect you and your family during a power outage at www.davenportiowa.com/energy.

Staff does not anticipate declaring a Snow Emergency at this time, however, there is a potential for a declaration should conditions warrant.

12/23/16, 6:30 AM
The National Weather Service forecast indicates we could receive up to a ½” of snow, mixed with rain, beginning later this afternoon into the evening.  Road conditions could become slushy and a little slick at times.  With warmer pavement temperatures, air temperatures mostly above 30 degrees Friday going into Saturday, and rain expected on Sunday, most precipitation is expected to melt.  Crews are prepared to respond as needed should conditions warrant.

Please remember to increase your following distance should conditions become slick and slushy.  Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

12/19/16, 3:00 PM
Crews completed clearing many residential roads and will return on Tuesday to finish.

12/19/16, 7:00 AM
Crews are plowing and salting residential roads today.  Please park off-street if you are able.

12/18/16, 12:30 PM
Crews have finished clearing Posted Snow Routes. They will return Monday morning to begin clearing and salting residential roads when temperatures improve, as treating these less trafficked roads today would result in significant glazing, making these roads icier and more hazardous.

Staff does not anticipate enforcing the sidewalk snow removal ordinance until Tuesday; however, if you live near a school please attempt to make a path for pedestrian safety.

CitiBus routes are running on time, and Solid Waste collection will run as regularly scheduled.

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect through 10AM, Monday, December 19th.

Stay warm and safe today. Please remember to drive with caution and increase your following distance during the evening and morning commute.

12/18/16, 6:30 AM
Snow ended around midnight. Blowing and drifting has kept crews busy maintaining safe conditions on Posted Snow Routes. Crews will not enter residential areas today as any plowing or salting that would be performed would result in significant glazing of roads, making them icier and more hazardous.   As soon as temperatures improve crews will enter residential areas as needed.

Travel conditions will be slick, especially on residential roads. If you do not have to go out, please stay home. If you do travel please remember to drive with caution and increase your following distance. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning. The warning is in effect through Noon today. Temperatures, without wind chill factored in, are expected to continue falling to 13 below zero by 8am this morning, and will not return to above zero until later this evening.

Stay safe today.  Remember to dress in layers if you must go out and keep pets inside.

12/17/16, 6:30 PM
TRAVEL IS NOT ADVISED THIS EVENING INTO SUNDAY.  Challenging conditions have arrived.  If you can stay home please do.  As of this writing crews anticipate snowfall to continue through at least 8pm.   Temps are predicted to continue dropping from 11 degrees at 8pm to -10 (without wind chill factored in) by 8am tomorrow morning.  The salt mix used becomes ineffective at temperatures below 5 degrees.

Crews will focus efforts on Posted Snow Routes through the evening attempting to keep emergency routes as safe as possible.  Crews will not enter residential areas following clearing of Posted Snow Routes for this event until temperatures improve. Any plowing or salting that would be performed would result in significant glazing of roads making them icier and more hazardous.   As soon as temperatures improve crews will enter residential areas as needed.

Stay safe this weekend.  Remember to dress in layers if you must go out and keep pets inside.

12/17/16, 3:30 PM
Crews have been called in to begin response to this event.

Please remember to drive with caution and increase your following distance when traveling.

12/17/16, 6:30 AM
Crews addressed conditions that arrived Friday evening, and are prepared to respond to the next round of predicted snow. The next system is expected to arrive around the lunch hour, may last through 11pm, and is predicted to leave us with around 1.5” of snow accumulations. The late arrival of snow, combined with blowing, drifting and temperatures plummeting below zero overnight, could make response to this event challenging as salt (combined with additional melting agents) becomes ineffective at temperatures below 5 degrees.

Staff does not anticipate declaring a Snow Emergency at this time. However we do encourage everyone to park off street when the snow begins to fly. Parking off-street helps crews clear roads faster, more effectively and safely.

Stay tuned for more details as this system arrives. For more information on winter weather response activities, winter weather preparedness tips and to sign-up for notifications when a Snow Emergency is Declared, visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

NOAA has issued a winter weather advisory for this event. The advisory is in effect through 12AM, Sunday, December 18th. Follow the forecast at http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php…

12/16/16, 7:00 PM
Crews are responding as needed to this evening's and overnight conditions as they arise.

12/16/16, 3:00 PM
It appears we are in for a couple more rounds of snow again this weekend. With predicted conditions of 1” of snow accumulation today and 2” of snow on Saturday, at first glance predicted weather might seem a little routine. But first glances can always be a little deceiving. Late snow arrival on Saturday, combined with blowing, drifting and temperatures plummeting below zero, response to this event could prove to be challenging.

Crews are prepared to respond, however, would like to caution everyone that travel could become unadvisable on Sunday depending on how predicted conditions lay out, as salt (combined with additional melting agents) becomes ineffective at temperatures below 5 degrees.

Staff does not anticipate declaring a Snow Emergency at this time. However we do encourage everyone to park off street when the snow begins to fly. Parking off-street helps crews clear roads faster, more effectively and safely.

Please keep BRRR in mind as we head into the evening. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

12/12/16, 3:00 PM
Crews have completed response to this weekend’s snow event.  There is a chance slick spots may develop overnight as a result of dropping temps combined with daytime melting.  When crews return Tuesday, they will continue to spot check and treat roads as needed.

Please drive with caution during Tuesday morning’s commute.

12/12/16, 7:30 AM
Crews completed plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes and residential roads overnight.  As a result of falling temperatures, some glazing has occurred.  Crews will continue coverage of this event throughout the day today, spot checking roads and applying salt.

Please use caution when driving this morning.  Increase your following distance.  Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

The Snow Emergency Declaration has expired.

12/11/16, 4:00 PM
Crews have been called into begin response to snowfall that has arrived. At this time we are unsure of expected snow accumulations, but indications are that the area will receive 1 or more inches.

Crews will plow and salt Posted Snow Routes until they are clear before removal begins on residential roads.

The current Snow Emergency will remain in effect through 7am, Monday, December 12th. Parking on Posted Snow Routes is prohibited when a Snow Emergency is in effect. Park off-street on all other streets if you are able. Parking off street, or coordinating with neighbors to park on one side of the street, helps crews clear roads faster and more safely.

As a parking alternative in the Downtown, residents and visitors to the area may continue to park for free in all 3 of the city’s parking ramps through 8am, Monday, December 12th.

As crews begin response, please be advised to use caution when driving. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

For more information on snow removal activities and other winter weather event tips visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

12/11/16, 6:30 AM
Forecasted back-to-back snow events for the area changed throughout the day yesterday.  Unofficial totals indicate we received approximately 1.4” of snow Saturday, and as of this writing the National Weather Service predicts the area may receive up to an additional inch of snowfall.

Crews have completed plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes and residential roads following Saturday's event.  We will continue monitoring conditions and are prepared to respond as needed to snow that may arrive today.

At this time, the Snow Emergency Declaration will remain active.  If conditions warrant, the Snow Emergency Declaration may be lifted earlier than it was originally set to expire.    Whether the Snow Emergency Declaration is lifted early or not, parking in all 3 of the city’s parking ramps will remain free through 8am Monday, December 12th.

Stay tuned throughout the day for more information on response to the upcoming snow event and status of the Snow Emergency Declaration.

12/10/16, 4:00 PM
Crews have been dispatched to begin response to this snow event.

Predicted weather has changed slightly, with most of the snow arriving before 11am on Sunday.

A Snow Emergency has been Declared effective 10pm this evening, Saturday, December 10th through 7am, Monday, December 12th. Please be reminded vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during a Snow Emergency will be ticketed and towed.  As an alternative, residents and visitors to the Downtown can park for free in any of the City’s three parking ramps beginning at 10pm this evening through 8am, Monday, December 12th.

Please park off-street when possible on all other roads.

Please do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions. Increase your following distance.

To help reduce windrow back onto cleared driveway approaches and sidewalks consider waiting to clear driveway approaches and sidewalks until after the plow has cleared snow from the street.

Find out more about winter weather response, Posted Snow Routes as well as informational and preparedness tips at davenportiowa.com/winter.

12/09/16, 4:00 PM
Based on National Weather Service predictions, a Snow Emergency has been Declared.  The Snow Emergency is set to begin at 10pm Saturday, December 10th and expire Monday, December 12th at 7am.

Two rounds of snow are expected. The current forecast indicates the area could receive up to 2 inches on Saturday beginning around 3 to 5pm, with the possibility of lingering light snow overnight.  The second band is expected to arrive before 8am Sunday, last all day and could bring with it snow accumulations of 4 inches or more.

We do not anticipate making a determination about whether a 2nd Snow Emergency for the Downtown and Hilltop Campus areas will be needed until Monday, December 12th based on actual conditions and snow accumulation.

Please be reminded, Parking on Posted Snow Routes during active Snow Emergencies is prohibited.  Vehicles Parked on Posted Snow Routes will be ticketed and may be towed.  Residents and visitors in the Downtown may park for free in all three of the City’s parking ramps beginning Saturday, December 10th at 10pm through Monday, December 12th at 8am.

Park off-street on all other streets not designated as Posted Snow Routes when possible.  If you live on a narrow street that is difficult to navigate under normal weather conditions, imagine maneuvering a plow or emergency vehicle during a snow event.   Parking off-street, or coordinating with neighbors to park on one side of the street, helps crews to clear roads faster and more safely, and prevents you from being plowed in.

For all snow events, crews provide continuous coverage on Posted Snow Routes until they are clear before snow removal takes place on residential roads. While snowfall may end, depending on the event, clearing Posted Snow Routes often takes place for a few to several more hours after the last snowflake falls.  Priority is placed on Posted Snow Routes to help ensure mobility throughout the city and support public safety, especially on: highly trafficked roads, roads near hospitals and schools, hills and routes that serve both public and school transportation services.

12/05/16, 2:00 PM
Crews have concluded response to Sunday's approximately 10" snow event.

12/05/16, 8:30 AM
Crews finished clearing Posted Snow Routes last night and began plowing residential roads.  Crews will continue plowing and salting residential roads throughout the day today.  All plowing and salting activities should be complete by 3pm this afternoon.

For pedestrian safety, please clear sidewalks of snow.  With colder temps and freezing expected later in the week, the job of clearing sidewalks will be much easier over the next two days than it will be mid-week.

Remember you can always find the latest on snow response activities at www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

12/04/16, 6:00 PM
Crews will be continuing coverage of this event through the evening and into the morning as needed.

Staff anticipates Posted Snow Routes will be clear around 8/9PM this evening at which time they will switch focus to residential areas.

Salt is being applied as clearing takes place to ensure continued melting and prevent slick spots from developing.

Most roads should be clear by Monday morning, however crews advise the traveling public to be cautious and to drive according to pavement conditions. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions.

Again, please park off street whenever possible to assist crews in clearing roads efficiently and safely.

12/04/16, 2:00 PM
Our first snow of the season has been anything but predictable. What started out as a predicted snowfall of up to 2.9” with rapid melting has now far surpassed forecasted levels at over 8 inches in many locations.

The City is modifying the response plan for this event based on conditions that have arrived. We will not be declaring a Snow Emergency, however, encourage everyone to move vehicles off of the road to allow crews to remove snow as efficiently and safely as possible.

Crews will be removing snow from Posted Snow Routes until routes are clear. After Posted Snow Routes are clear, crews will then move into residential areas. When possible, plowing will be performed on residential roads. If vehicular parking presents a hazard, crews will only make a pass with salt.

Melting is still expected to occur this evening and into Monday.

For pedestrian safety please remember to remove snow before school starts tomorrow. This event has brought heavy wet snow, so please exercise caution when removing snow. If you are able, consider helping to remove snow from neighboring sidewalks where the individual may be less able.   Information on health hazards and tips for snow removal are provided by the American Heart Association at this link.

Please do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions. Drive with caution and keep a safe distance from vehicles.

For more information on winter weather events visit www.davenportiowa.com/winter.

12/04/16, 10:30 AM
We have received a bit more snow than the forecast predicted. Crews are out. They are addressing Posted Snow Routes and hills.

Air and pavement temperatures are expected to rise throughout the day today, with rain to follow once the snow passes. With predicted weather this afternoon and higher temperatures into Monday, rapid snowmelt is expected.

Crews will remain on Posted Snow Routes until the snow stops. Conditions will be evaluated and a determination made if additional plowing is necessary in advance of the melt.

12/04/16, 7:00 AM
The First Snowfall for the Season has Arrived.

Current weather predictions indicate the area may receive up to 2.9 inches of wet snow, followed by rain. The greatest amount of snowfall is expected to arrive before 11am, and the event is expected to end by 2pm.

Some snow is accumulating on paved surfaces. Crews have been called in to address accumulating snow as needed on main thoroughfares and hills.

Crews are monitoring weather and road conditions and will continue response to this event based on conditions.

As with any winter weather event, please drive according to weather conditions.

Check out www.davenportiowa.com/winter for more information, and to sign-up for text, phone or e-mail notifications when a Snow Emergency is Declared.
