Micro-Surfacing Program

Picture of a street during the micro-surfacing processThe Micro-Surfacing Program is another approach to maintenance that provides greater flexibility in addressing pavement defects on streets which conventional overlays would not be cost effective for. Micro-surfacing involves applying a polymer modified asphalt and aggregate mixture that is designed to protect the pavement and provide a skid resistant wearing surface.  This method is beneficial on pavements which require work due to surface imperfections without causing excessive buildup of additional material on the pavement cross section.

Prior to micro-surfacing, Street Maintenance crews perform minor maintenance and crack sealing to the street before micro-surfacing is performed by contractors.  Work under this program is prioritized from a list of streets that have been resurfaced within the last three (3) years based upon age, traffic loading, bus/ snow route, and location near schools or other institutions.
