E Locust re-opened on Wednesday.  The contractor will return the first week of August to make final pavement repairs. Upon return, travel will be reduced to one lane in each direction for three to five days.

E Locust St Updates.  It isn’t pretty. Completion of repairs under the recent sinkhole allowed crews to inspect areas east and west of the initial repair site this week. Additional needs were discovered, including gas lines that need to be relocated and lead water lines that will need to be replaced. Once complete, effort will be directed to repairing sewer main and lateral connection issues. Pending the discovery of new conditions, work should be finished by the end of July.  Please be patient as several utilities continue working to make repairs.

Several issues with sewer and water lines were recently discovered to be the cause of two large sinkholes that developed on E. Locust St over the weekend. Four broken sewer laterals and two lead water service lines have been identified as of this afternoon.  Approximately one-third of the area of concern has been inspected.  Flow from the two water service line breaks has made the investigation difficult and requiring other interventions to reduce the flow while staff inspect the sewer main.

The City’s course of action is to repair what has been discovered to date, investigate another third, make repairs and then investigate the final third and make repairs as needed.  The plan will facilitate efficient repair where limited space exists for equipment and flow interventions.

The City is working with property owners affected by the broken laterals and lead water lines as they are discovered. Temporary potable water connections are also being worked on.

While a complex project to address, City staff is working as expeditiously as possible to make repairs and then restore the roadway.

The traveling public will need to be patient. Detours are likely to be in place through early to mid-July.

On the morning of Saturday, June 26, the Davenport Police Department shut East Locust Street down between Woodland and Kenwood due to a sinkhole observed in the road.  Sewer and traffic crews were dispatched to begin responding to the issue.  Traffic control was established, and staff began exploring the issue.

Crews are currently televising sanitary lines to identify the root cause.  At this time, it appears a large section of the sewer main and adjacent water main will require repairs. Locust will likely be closed between Woodland and Kenwood for at least two weeks while repairs are made.

The traveling public should follow signed detour routes along Eastern to Kimberly to Locust/Middle Rd.

The City will provide additional details and schedule a time for interviews as more becomes known.
