August 4, 2020 (Davenport, Iowa) — Urban Homestead houses, the bid for a neighborhood street reconstruction and renewing the contract for student resource officers to Davenport Community Schools are the three things you need to know for the first City Council cycle in August.

The City Council will hear the request for a hearing at its Aug. 19 meeting on conveying the houses at 1619 W. Pleasant St., and 1412 W. 14th St. to buyers through the Urban Homestead program. The houses, acquired and rehabilitated with oversight by Community and Economic Development, are being sold for $138,700 and $140,000.

The project is funded with a variety of federal housing grants and enables vacant properties to be returned to the tax rolls and improve neighborhoods while providing affordable homeownership opportunities.

The City Council will vote at its Aug. 12 meeting on the bid for construction of West 13th Street between North Stark Street and North Zenith Ave from Five Cities Construction of Coal Valley. The bid for $645,090.25 was the lowest of eight bids received.

The agreements with Davenport Community School District for a School Resource Officer and a liaison officer is also on the agenda for discussion of an Aug. 12 vote. Along with the safety the officers provide, they also build relationships with students, parents and school staff, mentor students and provide an educational component to the district.

Under the agreements, one for the 2019-2020 school year and the next two school years, 2020-2022, the city pays the salary and benefits for the officers and can bill those costs to the school district.
