2020/2021 Snow and Ice Event Response

03/15/21 | 6:00 PM

Today’s wintry mix is out of here.  Watch for early and overnight slick spots! Crews finished clearing Posted Snow Routes and checking hills and intersections before heading out earlier. With temperatures well into the 40s for the remainder of the week, melting any accumulating snow/slush on residential roads will happen in no time. Keep in mind overnight lows will be at freezing.

03/15/21 | 10:00 AM

Travel is slick. Take it slow and increase your following distance if you are out and about today. Crews will clear Posted Snow Routes until snow ends and routes are clear. Snow is predicted to continue through late afternoon. Chances for freezing rain remain possible. Please move parked vehicles off of Posted Snow Routes when possible.

03/15/21 | 6:00 AM

️Roads could be slick today #Davenport. Rain, sleet, and up to three inches of accumulating snow is possible beginning mid-morning through the afternoon. Public Works crews are prepared to respond as needed. Take it slow today! Know that snow won’t last long with warmer temperatures Tuesday through the week.

03/14/21 | 6:00 PM
What would life be like in #Davenport, IA, if we didn't have one last snow event mixed in between the 50's, 60's and 70's to remind us we live in the Midwest?
Be weather aware Monday, March 15. Morning and afternoon commutes could be slick!

02/21/21 | 7:00 PM
Public Works crews were called in to respond to light snow around 4 PM. The expected system did not bring the volume of snow anticipated and crews were able to leave after salting Posted Snow Routes.

02/21/21 | 6:15 AM
More snow is expected today, Sunday, February 21. Our friends at the National Weather Service tell us we could see around two inches of snow between 11 AM and 6 PM. Watch for slick roads. Slow down and increase your traveling distance.  Public Works crews will begin clearing Posted Snow Routes when snow arrives. Please park off-street on these roads when you are able.

Good news – we should see warmer temperatures and melting in the week ahead!

02/18/21 | 6:30 AM

Watch for slick spots this morning. Light snow overnight has re-coated roads. Crews are heading out to treat Posted Snow Routes. Slow down and increase your following distance.

02/17/21 | 7:00 AM
Crews finished pushing new snow to curb on residential roads late last night. Teams will be picking up curb line piles of snow in the Downtown and responding to requests for service today, Wednesday, February 17.

02/16/21 | 4:00 PM
Public Works finished clearing Posted Snow Routes earlier today and will continue pushing new snow to the curb on residential roads through the overnight. Please park off-street if you are able. With 49 consecutive days of snow on the ground, patience really is the name of the game right now. Look forward, as we are, to the possibility of temperatures reaching just above freezing on Sunday.

02/16/21 | 7:00 AM
Take it slow out there this morning. Roads are slick and Posted Snow Routes are partially covered. Crews will continue clearing Posted Snow Routes through mid-to-late morning. Once complete, teams will transition to pushing new snow to the curb on residential roads. Please park off-street if you are able to safely.

Bare pavement will take time on all roads due to current temperatures.

02/15/21 | 5:30 PM
Winter doesn't seem to want to loosen its grip on Davenport. Public Works crews have been called in to respond to arriving snow. Snow could last through the overnight and bring one to one and one-half inches to the area. Snow teams will clear Posted Snow Routes through the end of snow, possibly through the overnight.

Please park off Posted Snow Routes if you are able. This will keep you from being plowed in and allow crews to clear to the curb.

Continue to use caution and be aware of road conditions when traveling.

02/13/21 | 6:00 AM
Public Works crews have been called to begin clearing Posted Snow Routes following a few short bursts of snow overnight and currently falling snow.  Snow is expected to end by early to mid-morning today, Saturday, February 13.

Some routes may be slick. Take it slow.

With temperatures remaining at and below zero, dress in layers and limit time outside.

Crews will conclude response once Posted Snow Routes are complete.

02/12/21 | 7:30 AM
Light snow, frigid temps, and chances for slick roads remain our story as we head into the weekend #Davenport. Public Works crews were called in for a short time overnight to spot treat bridges, hills, and intersections following a period of light snow. Teams will continue spot treating Posted Snow Routes as needed throughout the day. Our next chance for light snow arrives later this evening, Friday, February 12 through Saturday morning. Around one inch of snow is forecast.

Dress in layers, limit time outside, and drive with caution.

02/09/21 | 6:30 AM
Public Works crews will continue pushing new/plowable snow to the curb on residential roads throughout the day today. Move cars off-street if you can do so safely.

Bundle up this week and drive with caution. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions. Temperatures will continue to hover zero to the teens, and daily snow chances remain in the forecast throughout the week.

02/08/21 | 6:45 PM
Public Works Snow Teams should finish clearing Posted Snow Routes later this evening and will begin pushing new or plowable snow to the curb overnight on residential roads. Move cars off-street if you can do so safely.

An update on conditions and status will be made available in the morning.

Drive with caution. Do not expect to drive as you would under normal weather conditions will be the theme going into the week as temperatures continue to hover zero to the teens and additional spotty chances for snow remain in the forecast.

Davenport has now received a little over 30 inches of snow, two inches of sleet, rain, and no appreciable melting in the last six weeks. Please be patient.

02/08/21 | Noon
Yep, you guessed it. It is snowing again. According to the current National Weather Service forecast, we could see up to an additional inch or more of snow through early this evening. Crews will continue maintaining Posted Snow Routes throughout the day today.

Travel with caution. Slick spots are likely.

As the ability exists, we will also continue working on known areas with hazardous accumulations of ice/snowpack when not on Posted Snow Routes in the coming week.

Be patient. It appears Mother Nature is not going to lend us much of a hand this week with melting or clearing activities.

02/08/21 | 6:30 AM
More of the same. Crews began response to yet another round of light snow earlier this morning. Response will conclude by mid-morning.

Some Posted Snow Routes will remain partially covered. Take it slow and increase your following distance while traveling over the coming days.

We will need temperatures to improve and more sunshine to help with melting and on-going snow removal activities over the next week.

Know there are spotty chances for light snow later this evening, Monday.

Bundle up and stay safe Davenport.

02/07/21 | 6:30 AM
Crews concluded snow response for Saturday’s snowfall event. Some Posted Snow Routes remain partially covered. Take it slow and increase your following distance while traveling over the coming days. We will need temperatures to improve and more sunshine to help with melting and on-going snow removal activities over the next week.

Know there are spotty chances for light snow later this evening and Monday.

Bundle up and stay safe Davenport.

02/06/21 | 11:30 AM
The National Weather Service forecast indicates we could receive between one and two inches of snow beginning around noon and lasting through 6 PM. More importantly, Davenport needs to be aware sub-zero temperatures are also in the forecast. Temperatures will decline throughout the day today and could reach as low as -26 degrees with wind chill overnight.

Crews will start clearing Posted Snow Routes once the snow arrives. Conditions are likely to be slick.

Keeping your faucet at a light drip overnight can help prevent frozen pipes. Leave cabinet doors open if you have pipes prone to freezing.

Remember to dress in layers when going out.

02/05/21 | 3:30 PM
Okay, folks, here’s the plan as we head into the weekend. Crews will finish plowing and salting residential roads this evening. Another round of snow is expected tomorrow, Sat, Feb 6. Frigid temps will continue for the next week.

Know Davenport has received nearly 25 inches of snow, two inches of sleet, and numerous inches of rain in the last five weeks with little to no appreciable melting. Complicating things further, by the time crews have made it to residential roads during the previous five weeks, these roads have been snow/ice-packed.

While we empathize and understand that ice-packed roads and alleys are incredibly frustrating for many residents dealing with icepack, residents need to understand resource limitations and the primary objective of the City’s Snow and Ice Control plan – ensure high priority and high volume roads are clear to promote travel across the city and safe access to priority locations such as schools, hospitals, and other transportation and public safety services.

As we head into the week ahead, know the situation with icepack will not improve in the near term as salt will be ineffective at melting for the most part. Be aware we cannot take a motor grader down every road or alley – not only is this not a fiscally responsible thing to do but in most cases unsafe and may do more harm than good.

Be patient and hang tight. At this time, our hands are tied until Mother Nature gives us a break.

As conditions permit, we will continue attempting to cut ice in various areas deemed dangerous. Please submit a service request, and include a pic if you can, if you feel your neighborhood road is dangerous – www.davenportiowa.com/pwrs.

02/05/21 | 6:00 AM
Crews completed Posed Snow Routes and began clearing residential roads overnight. Patchy slick spots are possible on snow routes this morning due to blowing and drifting. Take it slow whether you are driving your neighborhood or on Posted Snow Routes.

Snow teams expect to make it through all residential roads, plowing to the curb and salting by early evening, Friday, February 5.

Salt will be somewhat ineffective at melting much of anything through the week due to frigid temps. Periods of sun will help salt achieve some melting, but know bare pavement is not likely anytime soon on residential roads.

Remember snow has to go somewhere. Davenport has received nearly 25 inches of snow and two inches of sleet, not to mention rain, in the past five weeks with little to no appreciable melting. And our partners National Weather Service currently forecast more snow on the way for Saturday.

Please park off-street on residential roads to help our team clear roads safely and keep you from being plowed in.

The current Snow Emergency expires at 8 a.m., today, Friday, February 5.

02/04/21 | 4:00 p.m.
Snow is expected to end soon. With the end of snow, Davenport temperatures will begin to drop significantly, reaching six degrees, with a – 11 wind chill, by 5 a.m., Friday, February 5. Salt will start to become ineffective at melting much of anything as temperatures drop. Meaning the pavement bond for new and old ice/snow-pack will not be broken until Mother Nature gives us a break.

Crews will be clearing Posted Snow Routes through late this evening and expect to begin plowing and salting residential roads sometime overnight. Please do not expect bare pavement on residential roads, especially if not previously achieved due to snow/ice-pack.

Although windrow is likely with this event due to the type of precipitation received, crews will do their best to reduce windrow when they can. Snow has to go somewhere. Your choice to shovel before or after the plow comes through. Know that you will likely be more comfortable shoveling what you can now before temperatures drop.

Keep vehicles off of Posted Snow Routes for the duration of the emergency; 8 a.m., Friday, February 5. Please consider parking off-street on residential roads to help our team clear roads safely and keep you from being plowed in.

02/04/21 | 11:00 a.m.

Public Works crews are plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes. Crews will not clear residential roads until snow ends and Posted Snow Routes are clear. Take it slow out there Davenport. Travel conditions will be slick through this evening.

More updates to come later today.

Be reminded vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes may be ticketed and towed.

02/04/21 | 6:30 a.m.
A Snow Emergency is in effect 8 a.m., today, Thursday, February 4 through 8 a.m., Friday, February 5. Poor travel conditions are likely in Davenport this afternoon. Keep cars off of Posted Snow Routes to avoid a ticket and tow. Crews will begin clearing Posted Snow Routes as needed when the snow starts to fly.

Residents and visitors to Downtown Davenport may park for free in any of the City’s three ramps 8 a.m., Thursday, February 4 through 8 a.m. Friday, February 5 to avoid a ticket and tow.

02/03/21 | 5:00 p.m.
Well, it appears Phil might be right - more snow on the way. And things could get dicey out there tomorrow, Thursday, February 4, due to a system that will bring rain, then snow, and plunging temperatures.  Because the potential for flash freezing of precipitation on the roads is real in the afternoon, and there is potential for more than two inches of snow, we are declaring a Snow Emergency effective 8 a.m., Thursday, February 4 through 8 a.m., Friday, February 5. We really are on the fence with this one. Should things fizzle out, we will adjust Snow Emergency timing and let you know.

Expect poor travel and possibly visibility with tomorrow’s system.

Crews are prepared and will begin clearing Posted Snow Routes as needed when the snow starts to fly.

Residents and visitors to Downtown Davenport may park for free in any of the City’s three ramps 8 a.m., Thursday, February 4 through 8 a.m., Friday, February 5 to avoid a ticket and tow.

02/01/21 | 7:00 a.m.
Our snow team finished clearing residential roads overnight and will be spot-checking and clearing roads as needed today #Davenport. If you feel like your street was missed, let us know by filing a request at www.davenportiowa.com/pwrs or calling us at 563.326.7923.  Keep in mind, bare pavement will not be achieved where significant snowpack exists.

01/31/21 | 1:00 p.m.
Crews will button up snow removal on Posted Snow Routes in the next hour or so and then move to residential roads. With the transition, teams will clear snow to the curb where vehicular parking is not an issue. Please park off-street to help crews clear roads more safely and efficiently.

Be aware bare pavement may not be achieved where the snowpack is an issue.

Recognize snow has to go somewhere. Crews have been reminded to slow down to help reduce windrow back onto sidewalks and driveway approaches, but some windrow is possible due to the wet slushy type of snow being moved.

The possibility for additional light snow remains through the day. Crews will address Posted Snow Routes as needed while clearing residential roads.

The current Snow Emergency will be set to expire at 3 p.m. today, Sunday, January 31. Residents and visitors to the Downtown may still park for free in any of the City’s three parking ramps through 8 a.m., Monday, February 1.

01/31/21 | 6:00 a.m.
Davenport saw three or so inches of wet snow overnight. Combined with rain, it was a bit slushy out there. An additional half-inch of snow remains possible through late morning.

Crews will continue plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes until they are clear to the curb before moving to residential roads. Keep vehicles off Posted Snow Routes until the Snow Emergency expires at 8 p.m. this evening, Sunday, January 31.

If you are clearing driveways and sidewalks, know that this is wet, heavy snow. Take your time clearing. As crews make it through routes, keep in mind snow has to go somewhere. Some may be windrowed back onto sidewalks, and driveway approaches with three or so inches of wet slushy stuff pushed from the street. If you wish to hold off on clearing the drive and sidewalks until after plows have come through, know that sidewalk snow removal enforcement will not actively begin until late Monday and based on complaint.

01/30/21 | 7:00 p.m.
Did we say “challenging” weather when we announced the Snow Emergency this morning? Current rainfall is glazing surfaces in some areas. Freezing rain remains possible before all rain and freezing rain switches to snow. Please observe the Snow Emergency as declared to help crews clear whatever comes our way safely Davenport.

Road conditions can change on a dime. Please remember to take it slow when there is ice and snow.

01/30/21 | 6:30 a.m.
Our partners at the National Weather Service predict another challenging mixed bag of precipitation for #Davenport today, Saturday, January 30. A Snow Emergency has been declared based on the current forecast. Watch for hazardous travel conditions beginning later this morning through Sunday morning. The Snow Emergency will be in effect from 6 p.m., Saturday, January 30 through 8 p.m., Sunday, January 31.

A brief spotty period of freezing rain is possible late this morning. This is expected to be followed by rain, with the possibility of freezing rain and sleet, followed by snow beginning around 7 p.m. tonight. Two to five inches of snow is expected.

Cars parked on Posted Snow Routes during the Snow Emergency may be ticketed and towed. Visitors and residents in Downtown Davenport park for free in any of the city’s three parking ramps 5 p.m., Saturday, January 30 through 8 a.m., Monday, February 1.

Remember to take it slow on ice and snow.

01/29/21 | 5:30 p.m.
Be weather aware Davenport. There is potential for rain and freezing rain, followed by snow tomorrow, Saturday, January 30. Staff is monitoring the forecast. Declaration of a snow emergency is possible. If declared, an announcement will be made early tomorrow morning.

01/27/21 | 10:30 a.m.
A Snow Emergency specific to Downtown #Davenport and the Hilltop Campus area has been declared. The Snow Emergency will go into effect beginning at 9:00 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, January 27 through 6:00 a.m., Thursday, January 28. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes in these areas will be ticketed and may be towed.

Free parking in any of the City’s three parking ramps has been extended through 8:00 a.m., Thursday, January 28.  Avoid a ticket and help crews clear parking lanes by parking in the ramps.

01/27/21 | 8:00 a.m.
Public Works crews will continue moving through residential neighborhoods this morning. Salt has been applied; partial sun today and sun on Thursday will assist with melting. Be aware roads with icepack are passable and have been cleared to the extent possible. Additional clearing, or clearing to bare pavement, will not take place.

Please feel free to place a request for service after Noon today, Wednesday, January 27, if you do not believe your road has been serviced at all. Staff will follow-up and respond accordingly. Requests can be submitted at www.davenportiowa.com/pwrs.

As a heads up, enforcement of the sidewalk snow removal ordinance will begin later this morning. If you haven’t had a chance to clear the walk - now is a good time. Remember, sidewalk snow removal is about pedestrian safety. Have a neighbor that hasn’t cleared their walk? They may need assistance. If you are able, please help by lending a hand.

Know another round of snow, rain, and ice is possible this weekend, Saturday, January 30.

01/26/21 | 2:30 p.m.
Public Works crews have transitioned snow removal efforts to residential roads.  Please park off-street in these areas overnight when you are able. Parking off-street helps crews clear to the curb safely and efficiently, and keeps you from being plowed in. With the transition, the Snow Emergency and parking prohibition on Posted Snow Routes has been lifted.

As crews make it through neighborhoods, keep in mind snow has to go somewhere. With five or so inches of fluffy stuff pushed from the street, it is possible some will be windrowed back onto sidewalks and driveway approaches.  If you wish to hold off on clearing the drive and sidewalks until after plows have come through, know that sidewalk snow removal enforcement will not actively begin until late Wednesday and based on complaint.

Although the Snow Emergency has ended, residents and visitors to the Downtown can still park for free in any of the city’s three parking ramps through 8 a.m., Wednesday, January 27.

01/26/21 | 6:00 a.m.
Be aware - roads will be slick as you head out this morning. Plan ahead and drive with caution.

Garbage and recycling will be collected as scheduled. However, bulky waste will not be collected to allow staff to be reallocated to snow removal.
If you placed bulky waste for collection, please call 563.326.7923, so we can stop by after snow removal ends.

Davenport received around four inches of snow overnight, and based on the current forecast, chances for another inch of snow to fall remains through the lunch hour. Crews will continue clearing Posted Snow Routes until the snow ends and these routes are clear to the curb. Watch for news on the timing for the transition to residential roads later today.

Recognize snow has to go somewhere, and with a larger volume of snow, some windrowing back onto sidewalks and driveway approaches is possible. We will do our best to keep it low.

  •  Find more information and tips for this event below, in our 5:00 p.m., 01/25/21 update.

01/25/21 | 5:00 p.m.
Here’s what you need to know as we head into the evening.  Expected snow has arrived later than anticipated. The possibility for seven inches remains in the forecast.

  • Expect poor travel conditions, especially on residential roads. Plan ahead, take your time, and increase your following distance. Stay home if you don’t have to go out.
  • Snow has to go somewhere. With high volumes of plowed snow being pushed to the curb, we will likely see some level of windrow back onto sidewalks and driveway approaches.  Crews have been reminded to keep speeds low to reduce the amount thrown.
  • It is a matter of personal choice. It is often easier to keep up with the snow, shoveling periodically as it comes, but do expect you may have to re-clear portions of sidewalks and driveway approaches.  Don’t want to clear these areas again, wait until plows have cleared the street.
  • Know that crews will continuously plow Posted Snow Routes until the snow ends and Posted Snow Routes are clear before entering residential roads. Keep cars off of Posted Snow Routes to help snow teams clear roads safely and efficiently.
  • Residents and visitors to the Downtown can park for free in any of the city’s three parking ramps through 8 a.m., Wednesday, January 27.

01/25/21 | 6:00 a.m.
A Snow Emergency is in effect 8 a.m., Monday, January 25 through 8 a.m., Wednesday, January 27.  Snow is forecast to arrive around lunch. Snowfall rates of one-half inch to one inch per hour are possible. Travel conditions during the storm could be difficult to impassable at times due to snowfall rates.  The current National Weather Service forecast indicates #Davenport could receive around six inches of snow between Noon today and Noon, Tuesday, January 26.

Do not wait to move your vehicle off of Posted Snow Routes until the snow starts to fly. Staff will be out enforcing the ordinance later this morning. Keeping vehicles off of Posted Snow Routes helps crews clear roads efficiently and safely. Keeping your vehicle off-street means you also avoid a ticket and tow. Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in any of the City’s three parking ramps during the Snow Emergency.

Snow teams will not clear residential roads until the event ends, and Posted Snow Routes are clear to the curb to ensure high volume roads can support travel across the City.

Take it slow when there is ice and snow.

01/24/21 | 3:30 p.m.
Based on the current National Weather Service forecast, a Snow Emergency has been declared effective 8 a.m., Monday, January 25 through 8 a.m., Wednesday, January 27. Predictions are that #Davenport could receive six to 10 inches of snow beginning late Monday morning and last through Tuesday. Travel conditions during the storm could be difficult to impassable at times due to snowfall rates.  Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during the snow emergency will be ticketed and may be towed.  Stay tuned as this storm draws closer.

Residents and visitors to the Downtown may park for free in any of the City’s three parking ramps during the Snow Emergency.

This is not expected to be a wet, heavy snow.  High winds are expected to accompany this storm. The heaviest snow is currently predicted to arrive after the lunch hour.

01/23/21 | 2:30 p.m.
According to our partners at the National Weather Service, #Davenport is expected to see around a half-inch of snow overnight Saturday, January 23, with some ice possible.

Due to the absence of rain with this event, crews pre-treated Posted Snow Routes and are prepared to respond as needed overnight.

If you are out and about overnight, take it slow if there is snow.

More to come Sunday as we draw closer to the possibility of a more significant event on Monday, January 25.

01/17/21 | 2:00 p.m.
Crews concluded response and will continue to monitor conditions through the weekend, as chances for snow continue through Tuesday, January 19.

01/17/21 | 6:30 a.m.
Crews were called in overnight Sunday, January 17, to clear arriving ice and snow.  Chances for light snow remain in the forecast through late morning. The snow team will plow and salt Posted Snow Routes as needed until the snow ends. Slicks spots are likely on less-traveled roads, sidewalks, and parking lots.

01/15/21 | 6:30 a.m.
Crews were out until about 7:00 p.m. monitoring conditions last night, Thursday, January 14. The chance for pockets of light snow continues through today, Friday, January 15, according to our partners at the National Weather Service. Hit or miss short-lived snow showers could drop a quick half an inch of snow.  Crews are prepared to respond as needed.  Please drive according to conditions should snow arrive.

01/14/21 | 5:00 p.m.
Public Works crews are monitoring will respond as needed to the arriving light sleet, snow, rain mix.

01/14/21 | 8:00 a.m.
According to our friends at the National Weather Service, Davenport could see rain today, Thursday, January 14, followed by light snow late afternoon through Friday. Accumulations greater than one inch are not predicted at this time. Crews will clear Posted Snow Routes when the snow starts to fly.

01/11/21 | 8:00 a.m.

Davenport Public Works has issued a media release regarding the City's Snow & Ice Control Plan. Find helpful information on when to expect response in your neighborhood in the release and at www.davenportiowa.com/winter

01/05/21 | 8:30 a.m.

Snow removal in the Downtown and Hilltop Campus areas was completed early this morning, Tuesday, January 5. Crews are spot checking and clearing all roads and will close response to this event out at the end of the day, today.

01/04/21 | 9:00 a.m.
Higher temperatures with peeks of sunshine will help us melt out of our icy shell this week. Crews will be running through Posted Snow Routes and residential areas, addressing issues and spot clearing and treating roads today.

Due to the volume of ice covered snow, snow teams were not able to fully clear the parking lanes in the Downtown and Hilltop areas last night. A snow emergency specific to these areas, excluding 3rd and 4th St, will go into effect tonight, Monday, January 4th and 9 PM, and last through 6 AM, Tuesday, January 5th. Parking on Posted Snow Routes in these areas is prohibited during the emergency.  To assist with off-street parking, free parking in the city’s three ramps will remain free through 5 PM, Tuesday, January 5th.  Please park in the ramps to avoid a ticket and tow.

Knock on wood, no snow in the forecast, and high temperatures around 30 this week.

01/03/21 | 9:00 a.m.

Public Works is winding down the response to Davenport's recent snow/ice/sleet events. Crews have made a pass on all residential roads.  Look for melting next week as temperatures rise and the sun comes out.

Snow teams will be picking up and hauling away snow from parking lanes in the Downtown and Hilltop areas tonight.  Parking is prohibited on Posted Snow Routes in these areas between 9 p.m., Sunday, January 3 through 6 a.m., Monday, January 4.

Significant windrowing occurred due to the volume of snow, combined with conditions such as sleet and rain.  The City will only enforce sidewalk snow removal where it is apparent plows did not cover sidewalks or where it is evident property owners did not attempt to clear sidewalks.

The City asks only that you do what you can to help pedestrian travel, especially with school returning in person on Monday, January 4.  Consider helping a neighbor in need if you are able.

01/02/21 | 10:00 a.m.

Three things to know as we finish up this week of active weather.

  1. Public Works crews will be working on residential roads through this evening, Saturday, January 2.Be aware bare pavement may not be achieved. Rising temperatures and sun in the coming days will help with melting as we head into next week. Keep your vehicle off of the street to avoid being plowed in.
  2. A Second Snow Emergency specific to the Downtown and Hilltop Campus areas will go into effect at 9 p.m., Sunday, January 3 through 6 a.m., Monday, January 4. Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes in these areas during the Snow Emergency will be ticketed and may be towed.
  3. A small crew will be clearing piles from the Downtown overnight Saturday night in preparation for clearing snow from the curbs in the Downton on Sunday night. Please be courteous and mindful of this work in the traveled right-of-way. Parking remains free in City’s three parking ramps through 5 p.m., Monday, January 4.

01/02/21 | 6:30 a.m.
Garbage, along with recycling for those scheduled for recycling collection, is being collected as scheduled. Public Works crews are working on both Posted Snow Routes and some residential roads. Teams will not fully transition to residential streets until mid-day when Posted Snow Routes are complete. Clearing will take time.  Be aware bare pavement may not be achieved. Temperatures will need to improve, and some sun in the coming days will help improve salt's effectiveness in melting.

Avoid being plowed in. Keep vehicles off the road to help crews clear roads safely and efficiently.

Consider helping a neighbor in need with sidewalk and driveway clearing if you are able.

Yard wastes are not being collected today.  If you have yard wastes placed for collection today, Saturday, January 2, please call Public Works at 563.326.7923, and we will swing by to collect them next week.

01/01/21 | 5:00 p.m.
Expected snow will continue as sleet/freezing rain until temperatures drop. In whichever form it arrives, precipitation is forecast to continue through as late as 9 PM tonight, Fri, Jan 1. The volume of snow or sleet/freezing rain left to come? Anyone’s guess. Temperatures will have to drop before the snow arrives. And two to three inches is still possible, according to our partners at the National Weather Service. So, what does that mean to you?

Do not expect residential roads to be cleared from the current system before Sunday. Our response will be a mixed bag depending on conditions. We are currently tackling some residential conditions while maintaining Posted Snow Routes. When snow arrives, we will return attention to Posted Snow Routes.

Safest and best bet right now is to park off-street whether you are on a Posted Snow Route or residential road. Roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and bridge decks are slick. Stay home if you don’t have to go out. Roads are slick.

As we head into the evening, keep in mind our priority will be keeping main roads, critical hills, and access/support for emergency vehicles open. We understand it may be slick on your street. But there are only so many resources spread across 😲1,300 lanes miles of pavement, and precipitation is on-going.

01/01/21 | 8:00 a.m.
Three to five inches of snow is on its way.  A Snow Emergency is in effect starting at 10 AM today, Friday, January 1 through 10 AM, Saturday, January 2. Crews will focus snow removal to Posted Snow Routes once the snow starts to fly.

Move vehicles off Posted Snow Routes to avoid a ticket, towing, and being plowed in.

Please consider helping a neighbor in need of assistance with snow removal if you are able.

Take it slow when there is ice and snow.

12/31/20 | 4:30 p.m.
Crews have completed a pass on all residential roads with a plow and salt and are headed in for the night. Not for long, however.  The next snowstorm is expected to arrive around 9 AM, Friday, January 1, and last through the evening. It is bringing with it an additional one to three inches of snow.  The scheduled Snow Emergency will go into effect at 10 AM Friday, January 1 through Saturday, January 2.  Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during the Snow Emergency will be ticketed and may be towed.  More to come tomorrow as this next system arrives.

Stay safe Davenport on this New Year’s Eve and every day to come in 2021.

12/31/20 | 9:00 a.m.
Brace yourselves for more winter weather. Finishing up on round one and declaring a Snow Emergency for round two. Here's what you need to know as we head into the New Year.

  1.  Our friends at the National Weather Service have forecast one to three inches of snow, along with sleet, freezing rain, and rain on Friday, January 1. A Snow Emergency has been declared effective 10 a.m., Friday, January 1 through 10 a.m., Saturday, January 2, based on predicted conditions.
  2. Public Works crews should complete a pass with the plow and salt on all residential roads by late this evening, Thursday, December 31. Please be aware snowpack, ice, and temperatures make it impossible to clear to bare pavement in most cases. Please be patient as we continue to make our way through the City.
  3. Be aware this next system could contribute to downed power lines and trees. Report power outages to 888-427-5632. Report downed trees to Public Works by calling 563.326.7923.

Stay safe and remember to take it slow when there is ice and snow.

12/31/20 | 6:15 a.m.
Yard wastes will not be collected on Thursday, December 31, or Saturday, January 2, to allow Public Works to reallocate resources to snow removal. Please call public work at 563.326.7923 to let us know if you have yard waste or a live Christmas tree placed for collection. We will swing by next week to collect the material.

12/30/20 | 4:30 p.m.
Folks, we know it isn't easy to travel on residential roads right now. Please be patient. Every storm's initial focus is to clear Posted Snow Routes to promote travel, commerce, and emergency response across the City. Most residential roads are located within one to six blocks of a Posted Snow Route. Response is broken out this way because the City does not have the resources to clear all of Davenport’s nearly 1,300 lane miles of pavement simultaneously.

Mixed precipitation ended and left us with a sloppy mess just twelve hours ago. Our road use tax-funded CDL pool and equipment resources of around 40 per shift are working as quickly and safely as possible given the conditions.

We know it is frustrating but bear with us.  Excessive sleet and rain, combined with snow, has made for challenging conditions, including ice.  Slush is further complicating things. While often unavoidable, windrowing material back onto sidewalks with this material just can't be helped, and crews are doing the best they can to slow down and reduce the volume thrown.

12/30/20 | 1:00 p.m.

Public Works crews are finishing up Posted Snow Routes and transitioning focus to clearing residential roads. Avoid being plowed in. Move your car off the street when possible. Our teams will be making one pass with the plow and salt on residential roads unless parked vehicles make it unsafe for the plow to get through.

We anticipate one pass will be made on all residential roads by late New Year’s Eve, December 31. Just in time for the next round of mixed weather to arrive. Keep in mind additional passes may be needed, as the first pass may only remove the top layer of ice before the next system comes and crews return to clearing Posted Snow Routes.

Be sure to shovel sidewalks before our next batch of winter weather begins.  This round is expected to bring more snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain.

12/30/20 | 8:00 a.m.
We have received many calls this morning inquiring about whether solid waste will be collected today or not. The answer is yes; we are collecting solid waste today. However, delays are possible. If today is your regular garbage day and we have not collected it by 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 31, give us a call to report it at 563.326.7923.

12/30/20 | 6:00 a.m.

Roads are a bit slushy this morning. Crews expect to finish Posted Snow Routes by mid-day before clearing residential streets.  The possibility for some flash freezing to occur due to dropping temperatures could keep teams on Posted Snow Routes longer.

Tips for this morning,

  •  Watch for slick spots on snow routes, bridge decks, sidewalks, and parking lots. Drive with caution if you are heading out.
  •  Keep vehicles off of Posted Snow Routes. Snow Emergency ends at 4 PM, Wednesday, December 30.
  • Avoid being plowed in. Move vehicles off of residential roads to help crews clear roads faster and more safely when they enter these zones.

12/29/20 | 8:00 a.m.
A Snow Emergency has been declared effective Noon, Tuesday, December 29 through 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, based on the Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service. Expect poor travel conditions.

Vehicles parked on Posted Snow Routes during a Snow Emergency will be ticketed and towed. Residents and visitors to Downtown Davenport are welcome to park for free in any of the City’s three parking ramps from Noon, Tuesday, December 29 through 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 30.

Stay home if you are able; drive with caution if you must go out.

Heavy snow is forecast to begin around the lunch hour and last through the evening commute and is expected to be followed by sleet and freezing rain early Wednesday.

12/28/20 | 4:30 p.m.
Davenport Public Works has been monitoring reports from our partners at the National Weather Service today and preparing to respond to arriving winter weather on Tuesday, December 29. Be aware and prepared; the afternoon and early evening commute could be slow going due to predicted ice and snow.

12/27/20 | 6:00 p.m.
Public Works crews have been called in to make a pass on Posted Snow Routes. The team will spot plow and salt as needed.  It is possible for slick spots to develop overnight as temperatures drop, especially on less traveled roads and bridge decks.

12/12/20 | 12:30 p.m.
Public Works crews have finished plowing and salting Posted Snow Routes and salting residential hills. Additional clearing will not be done. Slick spots are possible overnight, especially on less-traveled roads and bridge decks, due to dipping temperatures. Take it slow. And, don’t forget to clear sidewalks; school returns in-person on Monday, December 14.

12/12/20 | 7:15 a.m.
Snow has arrived. Light snow is expected to fall through the afternoon Saturday, December 12. Crews have been dispatched to clear Posted Snow Routes. Remember to take it slow when there is ice and snow.

12/11/20
Our friends at the National Weather Service tell us Davenport could see up to one inch of snow beginning late Friday evening through the morning of Saturday, December 12.

The Public Works snow team has been placed on-call and is prepared to respond as needed.

It is especially important to pay attention to road conditions; the weather could change at any time and cause slick spots to develop.

11/23/20
Our friends at the National Weather Service tell us there is a possibility Davenport will receive snow early morning Tuesday, November 24.  Snow is expected to change to rain.  The early morning commute could be a bit slick and slushy.

Crews are prepared to respond as needed.

Just remember to take it slow when there is ice and snow.

With winter weather just around the corner, the City of Davenport encourages all residents and visitors to be prepared by signing up for Davenport Snow Emergency alerts.

You can choose to receive alerts as a text, email or voice alert.

To subscribe, go to www.davenportiowa.com/davenportdirect, enter the phone number or e-mail address they want to receive information at, select Snow Emergency Declarations, and hit submit.

Snow emergency notifications are the most reliable way to know when a snow emergency has been declared in Davenport. Snow emergencies are declared when the area is expected to receive ice and significant hazard producing and travel slowing snow.

As part of winter preparation and to help our community prepare, the City will be conducting a test of the snow emergency alert notification system next week. Subscribers who do not receive notification will be advised to let us know so we can make sure our records and their submission are accurate.

Visitors and residents are reminded that parking is prohibited on Posted Snow Routes when a snow emergency is declared. This helps Public Work crews ensure the highest traffic volume roads and hills receive priority service to help everyone get around when the snow starts to fly.
