The Davenport Compost Facility is accredited by the American Public Works Association and designated a Model Program.

Now Available!   organic bags
Sorry, out of bulk for 2009!
Bulk Earth Cycle brand organic potting soil is now available at the facility for $15 per cubic yard and $2.50 per one cubic foot bag (still available). This product is high in organic matter and water holding capacity and is a great material for flower pots/beds and gardens. Organic nutrients reduce fertilization!

Project to Watch!

Prairie Heights - October 16, 2007

The City of Davenport Parks Department has three baseball fields under construction at Prairie Heights north of 53rd Street. The stockpiled "topsoil" was low in organic matter which inhibits moisture absorption and promotes runoff of sediment and nutrients. Soil for the playing surfaces has been blended with 1,100 cubic yards of Soil Builder compost. The new soil mixture which is high in organic matter, will allow for deep penetration of the turf root system, increase absorption of moisture and nutrients and require less watering and fertilization than typical turf playing surfaces.

View of field two shows (sub soil) clay soil after the site has been graded. The slightly darker material is the stockpiled topsoil and the very dark material is Soil Builder compost being placed into position for blending with the topsoil.

New Iowa State Fair Record!
pumpkin 1176

Congratulations to Walcott native Mike Frantz shown in photo above with his new 2007 Iowa State Fair record 1,176 pound pumpkin. The pumpkin was grown in Earth Cycle Compost amended soil and at times was growing over 40 pounds per day! The giant will be on display at the Davenport Compost Facility for the next several weeks before being dropped into the grinder and recycled into next years compost. Mike has several more (still growing) for the Mid-West Pumpkin Growers competition in October that may exceed this monster!

PS - Mike also placed 5th at the Indiana State Fair with a 901 pounder!

The Davenport Compost Facility recycles yard, garden and tree trimmings from the City of Davenport and surrounding Scott County, Iowa.

These materials are processed to create environmentally safe and beneficial composted soil amendments. Each year the facility diverts 130,000 cubic yards of organic materials from the land fill.
