Catch Basin Cleaning

Picture of a storm drain or catch basinCatch basins, storm drains and storm water inlets convey water from streets and other impervious surfaces. This water travels to undergound storm water, or storm sewer, pipes that outfall to the nearest creek or stream, and eventually the Mississippi River.

Water is not treated or cleaned before entering local water bodies, that is why it is important for all citizens to understand their personal impact on water quality.  Learn more on our storm water web pages.

As for maintenance, the tops of catch basins are generally cleaned through our street sweeping program.

Problem drainage areas are checked more frequently for possible debris accumulation, and cleaned as necessary.

If you believe a catch basin is plugged report it by calling 563.326.7923 during business hours, or by submitting a request for service electronically.

Help prevent storm drains from becoming clogged, and contributing to localized flooding by clearing off the top if you are able.  And, remember only rain down the storm drain.  You can be fined for raking leaves and grass clippings to the street.
